Why we need to be angry sometimes (regardless what the Stoics say)

Menno van der Land / May 7, 2020

I don’t know about you, but I can get quite angry sometimes. It doesn’t happen often, but things like injustice, cheating and disrespectful behavior can really piss me off. It is a trait…

Do you want what you wish?

Menno van der Land / April 30, 2020

“You don’t have to learn to want,” said Greek philosopher Seneca. And indeed, we humans seem very good at wanting. We want all kinds of things. And there are things we don’t want.…

Forget being who you are. Life’s about becoming who you want to be

Menno van der Land / April 19, 2020

You may recognize this: To friends, family or colleagues you can’t refrain from stressing that you “want to be yourself”, and meanwhile you silently ask yourself, “Who am I actually?” If so, then…

    Authenticity: your values, your choice

Menno van der Land / April 2, 2020

If you buy an age-old painting for a lot of money, you probably want a certificate that guarantees the authenticity of the painting, so that you can be sure that you are not…

Rollo May on choosing to live

Menno van der Land / December 25, 2019

“It is doubtful whether anyone really begins to live, until he has frankly confronted the terrifying fact that he could wipe out his existence but chooses not to. Since one is free to…

Menno van der Land / November 21, 2019

I just finished reading ‘Man’s search for meaning’ by Viktor Frankl. Here are my 10 favorite quotes from this highly recommended book: 1. Happiness cannot be pursued; it must ensue. A human being…

    Fromm’s The art of loving

Menno van der Land / April 29, 2019

My favorite quote from Erich Fromm’s book The Art of Loving is this one: “There is hardly any activity, any enterprise, which is started with such tremendous hopes and expectations, and yet which…

On time (and why ‘living in the now’ is b*s*)

Menno van der Land / February 20, 2019

“Temporality is evidently an organised structure. The three so-called “elements” of time, past, present, and future,  should not be considered as collection of “givens” for us to sum up – for example, as…

    On free will

Menno van der Land / February 17, 2019

I think the whole free will – determinism discussion is pointless, because it’s about two extremes neither of which represents reality. Free will advocates who claim our will is completeley free of whatever…

    On failing

Menno van der Land / February 8, 2019

When something goes wrong, a lot of people blame themselves. They feel they have failed, they are to blame. Does that sound familiar? In that case I would like to share an analogy…

Welcome to Existential Reflections

Recent musing

Every time someone asks me if I have children, and my answer is ‘no’, I am amazed that the default follow-up question is: “why not?” Apparently it’s OK to ask people to justify their highly personal life choices. Especially when those choices deviate from what is considered ‘normal.’ People who do have children rarely have to defend themselves. Although in my opinion it makes more sense to ask people why they chose to have children. A convincing answer to why you would bring children into this world, proving you have given it proper consideration, seems more appropriate to me than having to justify staying childfree.

Books in Dutch

I have published two books about the history of the Dutch political party D66: Tussen ideaal en illusie and Langs de afgrond. My latest book is Friese voorouders, about the story of my Frisian ancestors, a story spanning 500 years and 13 generations. You can read more about my books in Dutch here.

Travel

Never having left my home country as a kid, I have been traveling the world my whole adult life. I feel very fortunate that I have been able to visit many incredibly beautiful places around the world. I have set up a dedicated website about my travels: Traveling Dutchie.
